Accompaning text on the soloshow Naked Nation at the Pinakothek der Moderne/ Munich.

How do being and acting inter-relate? ”Society“ is composed of very different forms of life and all our conceptions of what is considered right or natural are based purely on general consent. This makes any sense of identity a cultural construct that is subject to constant change. But what role does the body of the individual play in this – as that which is seen to be the decisive instrument of ”infallible“ human perception? Where precisely do we draw the boundaries between the individual and society? Which boundaries are we willing to overstep, and which ones are indispensable for
living together?

The work of Thomas Steffl is concerned with the fragile system of relationships between body, society and nature, with counterweights and imbalances.

The video installation Baumfrau (Tree Woman) calls to mind that age-old, romantic idea of a life freed from the fetters of civilisation, one that is close to nature. What is it that drives us to dream of pursuing a ”different” kind of life? Where are the opportunities, wherein lie the dangers?
At some undefined place, people are seen carrying wooden beams through a three-part, pictorial panorama (Naked Nation). What construction are their bodies building there? Or is rather that they are dismantling a building? Does the longing for freedom automatically exclude the desire for security? Is there a reality in which these two opposing sentiments are rendered null and void? And, if so, would this be a state of paradise?

Somersault Minsk, likewise, plays with the sensation of losing orientation. To the vibrating sound of rotations, a somersault swing revolves through the interior of a house. As the pendulous motion grows stronger, so the visual experience displaces our ability to think and is relayed to the resonance cavity of our body.

Cousins Kiss – a bath towel and a swing gate – illuminate the anarchic potential of the body and mark a boundary, where eros and intellect, longings and fears touch each other .
